I came, I saw, I enjoyed
Join Dr Zhu Zhu from the University of Aberdeen, UK, for an interactive chat session to delve into experiences, reflections and aspirations together.
Zhu will kick off the session by providing detailed insights into the postgraduate taught programmes offered at the School of Language, Literature, Music, and Visual Culture at the University of Aberdeen. Discover how these programmes may align with your interests and aspirations, and explore the opportunities they offer.
Zhu will then reflect on her own experience as an international student over two decades ago and offer her insights into the current study culture in UK universities, along with aspects of life in the UK.
Beyond academia, Zhu sees the past two decades as a journey of self-discovery. She’ll share her passions for hiking, gardening, visiting historic houses, and spotting wildlife. Her translation work and academic research are intertwined with her everyday interests.
One highlight of her journey includes the discovery of the family grave of James Legge, the renowned 19th-century Scottish missionary, linguist, translator, and sinologist born in Aberdeenshire. This discovery sparked her current research project, which inspired her to know more about the Scottish Enlightenment and Scottish common sense realism.
Life is a journey of coincidences and surprises, but there are always moments of joy and fulfilment wherever your journey takes you. As you explore Aberdeen and beyond, you too may find yourself smiling, “I came, I saw, I enjoyed.”
Speaker:
Dr. Zhu Zhu holds a PhD in Translation Studies from Newcastle University and currently coordinates the Modern Languages and Translation & Interpreting program at the University of Aberdeen. Before joining Aberdeen in 2020, she directed Chinese language programmes at the University of Leeds (2017-2020) and the University of Edinburgh (2007-2017). Her research primarily focuses on the translation competence of L2 Chinese learners, historical translation movements in China, and the Victorian-era translation of Chinese literature. Zhu is also an active translator and has published a number of translated books in China.
